Yen erh Chuang
Milly
About Yen erh Chuang
I will call her “milly-san”.
She is from Taiwan and was introduced to Kochi Prefecture in 2016 through a book encounter with fabric artist Yumi Hayakawa.
She was introduced to Kochi by a friend during her wanderlust.
There, I visited the top of a mountain in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture, where the sunset reflected on the terraced rice paddies was very beautiful.
There is the studio of Teppei Ono, who is Milly's teacher.
Teppei Ono is currently studying pottery there while also pursuing his own ceramic art activities.
We first saw her work at the Lantern Festival in 2022.
Among the many wonderful contemporary works on display, we stopped by her booth.
The earthy, natural texture of her hand-twisted works exuded warmth.
Some of them are like art with no fixed purpose, and they are very lovely.
The view of the world that she creates is also very lovely.
I was struck by the view of the world and the humanity of Mr. Milly.
She remembered the request we exchanged on the spot,
I was able to visit her studio in early summer of 2023.
Many lovely works were lined up in her home, which was filled with gentle natural light.
We had a luxurious time enjoying homemade bread and freshly brewed tea in Milly's bowls.
The many photographs she takes, as if she were a friend of nature.
The usual walking path that seems to go on forever in the forest.
Her gentle voice as she casually sang to us while we gazed at the terraced rice paddies.
And Teppei-san, Yumi-san, and their apprentices who warmly welcomed us, even though we had never met them before.
The experience of that day is deeply etched in my mind, and I can't describe what attracted me to her work.
It is hard to put into words, but I felt that I received the answer to my question.
Ms. Milly is scheduled to leave Kochi this year, in 2025,
I don't know how long I will be able to pick up her works in Japan.
I don't know how long I will be able to pick up her work in Japan, but I will always be a fan of hers,
I would be happy if I could share with as many people as possible the magic that I feel when I hold this vessel in my hand.
I would be very happy if I could share the magic that is felt when I hold this vessel in my hand.
